About the impacts
The impacts generated by Nereus initiatives reflect our commitment to delivering tangible, measurable changes across the territories and sectors we engage with, creating long-term value through sustainable, innovative, and collaborative solutions.

Technical
components and stack architecture while targeting high performance, low energy consumption and improved durability. The project aims to reach high nominal current densities≥1.5 A/cm²), low energy consumption (≤48 kWh/kgH₂), and limited degradation (≤0.5% per 1000 h), supported byAI-based digital twins and diagnostics to reduce BoP downtime by around 20%.

Environmental
NEREUS targets a low hydrogen carbon footprint of ≤3.5 kgCO2eq/kgH₂, in line with EU climate objectives. The project also promotes reduced use of critical raw materials, PFAS-free materials, recyclability and lower water treatment requirements compared with conventional systems.

Economic
The project aims to reduce hydrogen production costs to <3 €/kg, system CAPEX to ≤300 €/kW and stack costs to ≤150 €/kW. It also supports scalable manufacturing, industrial validation from TRL 4 to TRL 6 and stronger European competitiveness in AEM electrolyzer technologies.
Social
The project supports decentralized hydrogen production from renewable energy, strengthening EU energy security and enabling industrial decarbonization. By reducing dependence on on critical imported materials and supporting clean technology deployment, the project contributes to more resilient and sustainable European value chains.
